Outstanding Dissertation Award
Selection Procedures
The Council on Anthropology and Education (CAE) has established an annual award to recognize the author of an outstanding dissertation recently completed in the field of anthropology and education.
Dissertation Award Committee: The dissertation award committee will consist of three members invited and appointed by the CAE Board of Directors or their designated representative, prior to February of the award year. The members will select the chair. A committee may include two members returning for their second year. No member will serve more than 2 consecutive years.
Finalists: A short list of finalists will be selected by July. Finalists will be asked to submit copies of their completed dissertation within 2 weeks. The winner will be selected from among the finalists and selected on the basis of a reading of the completed dissertation by all members of the award committee.
Evaluation Guidelines: The dissertation award committee will be guided by such considerations as:
- The issue addressed in the study bridges the theories and practices of anthropology and education.
- The author-researcher applies anthropological methods and concepts in handling and reporting data thoroughly and insightfully; and
- The study is of high quality and makes an important contribution to the field.
Final Decision: The final decision will be made by committee members and forwarded to the President of CAE by September 15. Depending on the quality of the submitted dissertations, there may be one or more selected in each of the categories Winner and Finalist. In addition, the committee may recommend to the President of CAE those nominees (non-Finalists) who deserve honorable mention on the basis of the excellent summaries and accompanying letters received by the committee.
Recognition Letters from CAE: The CAE President will announce the results of the annual competition by September 30 by notifying every person who has been nominated and informing them whether or not they have been selected Winner, Finalist, or Honorable Mention. The results will be
also published in the Anthropology News. A certificate of the award will be presented to the winner(s) along with a cash award at the CAE business meeting at the American Anthropological Association Annual Meeting. If there is more than one winner, the cash award will be divided among the recipients.
