Committee Charge

Objectives: This committee organizes and reviews the nominations for specific AAA awards and selects a recommended winner for each.

Duration of Committee: Permanent

Committee Reports to: AAA Executive Board

Responsibilities:

• to organize and review information regarding the nominations and recommend winners for the following AAA awards:
  • The Franz Boas Award for Exemplary Service to Anthropology;
  • The Anthropology in Media Award;
  • The Robert B. Textor and Family Prize for Excellence in Anticipatory Anthropology; and
  • The AAA/Oxford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching
• Coordinate with the award committees for the Margaret Mead Award, Alfred Vincent Kidder Award, the David M. Schneider Award in Anthropology and the Solon T. Kimball Award to ensure that winners are selected in a timely way, the committee(s) are in place and functioning, and the awards presentations at the AAA Annual Meeting appropriate honor the individuals in question
• Committee members are expected to attend the Awards Ceremony at the AAA Annual Meetings where they will be recognized by the AAA President

Membership and Appointment:

• Four-member committee including the chair
• Three-year terms
• Committee members are appointed by the president with one seat designated for a student
• This committee is chaired by an appointed member of the executive board
• The appointment of the new chair is made the year prior to the departure of the sitting chair. This is an ex-officio non-voting role.

Product: A written report to the Executive Board.

Meetings and Schedule: Committee meets in the spring.
